Two weeks changes the engineering question
For a short absence, a recently inspected system may cover a few scheduled runs. Two weeks introduces more weather variation, battery exposure, plant growth and opportunity for a small leak, blocked emitter or detached tube to matter.
The answer is not a longer timer programme. Measure each plant group's delivery, prove the water source or stored capacity, remove unnecessary failure points, rehearse under realistic conditions and arrange a person who can respond to exceptions whenever possible.
This page designs the fourteen-day capacity and resilience. The seven-day departure rehearsal is the execution calendar, while greenhouse-only risks have their own plan.
Decide what must remain in automatic care
List every group and choose one action:
- automatic root-level watering;
- passive reservoir or capillary system;
- moved to a cooler or less exposed position;
- grouped with compatible plants;
- hand-watered by a helper;
- allowed to rely on established ground reserves where appropriate;
- temporarily removed from production or harvested.
Do not connect every plant simply because pipe is available. A fragile, highly variable outlier can make an otherwise simple system harder to trust.
Measure daily delivery by group
Run each automatic zone for its proposed programme. Collect representative near, middle and far output. Inspect the root condition before and after, and repeat across several days that include differing weather where possible.
Record actual litres delivered rather than timer minutes alone. For point emitters:
zone litres per run = sum of measured emitter litres during the run
For reservoirs:
days of usable reserve = usable litres above the intake / measured daily litres
Use usable, not nominal, capacity. Keep a margin for hotter weather, variation and the minimum level required by a pump. Do not plan to run a pump dry.
Check mains-water boundaries
If the system uses mains water, verify the current supplier restriction notice before departure. A timer does not create permission during a hosepipe restriction. Rules and exemptions can differ by supplier and notice.
Use the UK hosepipe-ban tracker to find the responsible supplier and source. If the position is unclear, choose an explicitly permitted method or ask the supplier.
Know where the physical supply can be closed. A remote pause is not a substitute for isolation.
Reduce demand before adding runtime
Where horticulturally suitable:
- move portable pots away from the hottest reflected surfaces;
- group compatible containers without blocking airflow;
- apply suitable mulch while keeping stems and service points clear;
- harvest ripe crops;
- test greenhouse ventilation and shading;
- repair leaks and improve emitter placement;
- remove empty laterals and unnecessary connectors.
Demand reduction can increase resilience without increasing stored water or pressure.
Simplify zones for the absence
Keep only plant groups that truly need different programmes. Label every remaining line at both ends. Blank unused outlets securely and remove loose branches.
Run high-demand circuits sequentially. Confirm the final outlet flows and every valve closes. Keep filters, regulators and flush points visible.
Avoid last-minute equipment additions. Each untested connector expands the failure surface.
Rehearse a full fourteen-day operating pattern
Ideally begin at least two weeks before travel. Run the exact schedules while the household is still available to observe. This does not reproduce future weather, but it exposes installation and programme faults.
Record daily:
- weather and forecast change;
- programme actually executed;
- root-zone condition;
- near/far delivery exceptions;
- leaks, runoff or standing water;
- battery and gateway indicators as defined by the manual;
- human intervention.
A system requiring repeated rescue during rehearsal is not ready for a longer unattended period.
Test failure recovery
Simulate only safe, reversible conditions:
- loss of phone access;
- gateway power interruption and recovery;
- one paused zone;
- manual local open and close;
- physical water isolation;
- a deliberately identified blocked test emitter that is cleaned before acceptance.
Confirm how stored schedules behave using the current manual and observation. Do not assume cloud, RF or battery behaviour from product category names.
Build an exception-only human plan
Even when the aim is “no daily neighbour watering”, arrange a local contact if possible. Their task is not to judge schedules. Provide a one-page exception plan:
- where the shut-off is;
- what a normal dry path and filter look like;
- zone names matching physical labels;
- when to close the supply;
- one measured rescue-watering instruction;
- your contact and an alternative.
“Close this tap if the patio is wet” is actionable. “Keep an eye on the garden” is not.
If nobody can access the property, reduce the system's consequence: conservative programmes, root-level delivery, visible joints, no spray across buildings and a water source whose failure cannot drain an unsafe volume. Some plants may need to be relocated or entrusted elsewhere.
Final 24-hour freeze
Do not change hardware or schedules during the final day unless correcting a safety fault. Watch one complete automatic cycle, check the final emitter, inspect every connection with dry tissue and verify closure.
Save photographs of normal state. Confirm access arrangements, forecast, supplier notice and travel contacts.
Audit the system after returning
Before changing schedules, photograph the returned state and inspect roots, paths, joints, filter and final emitters. Compare observed water use with the planned range where a meter or reservoir record exists. Record every intervention made by the local contact. That return audit is the evidence for the next absence; a garden that merely survived does not prove every zone operated correctly.
